Base Camp Day!

 Sonia for Sarah...

Nov. 14, 2021 Gorak Shep, Nepal

Mount Everest Base Camp is now a memory, an  experience had, and part of my past. After Kala last night and a crappy night's sleep, today's hike was a lot to ask of my body. Starting at over 17,000 ft, lots of ups and downs, and ending at 17,600 ft. I was so slow...but I was determined to make it...I prayed for the first time in years and asked God and Everest, goddess mother of the earth, for strength & perseverance. My legs were tired, my lungs struggled, and my body lagged. I never thought of giving up and with prayers answered & one last push, I made it. It didn't take long before I was hugging and high-fiving teammates that arrived before me. I took a look around, found the shoulder of Everest that was visible and then climbed up on the rock.

After that I wandered over to get a good view of the Khumbu ice fall. So amazing to see up close!

Next up we took some group photos, I helped hang up prayer flags and found the one I made with my 14-year-old, Joseph. Surreal to see it up and hanging at Base Camp.

I sat and had a snack, took it all in for a bit and then scooped up my pack and trekking poles, gave my body a pep talk, and hit the trail back to Gorak Shep. We arrived back at our lodge, had lunch, and prepped for what I thought would be a long hike to Periche. However, my journey unfolded differently than I expected. I leave that for the next post. Thank you for following my journey and supporting the cause.

Stay tuned for the next chapter...

About once a year I like to take a solo trip. Time to myself to reset, recenter, and make sure I'm keeping these two feet that don't...
